“If we don’t think a paid appraisal would be a good use of your money, we’ll tell you.”

Illustrated process. Owner, Slava and home-visit footage is AI-generated using the supplied likeness references; the piano is digitally branded with the Norberg logo for this illustration. The grand-piano close-up is an AI-assisted illustration and animation based on a real interior reference; the upright interior cutaway uses an AI-generated still with camera movement. See the image credits for the reference and adaptation licence. Website steps are captured from the working Norberg draft using illustrative entries and Norberg example piano photos. Phone-consultation footage and research, report and email layouts are illustrations; no client case, actual valuation or guaranteed outcome is depicted.

Evidence behind your price can help you negotiate for more money. Can't find a buyer? A qualifying donation may offer significant tax savings, depending on your circumstances. Insurance, estates, inheritance, purchases and family settlements may also need a documented value. We confirm the requirements first. Start with a few quick questions on our website. No payment. No detailed photo checklist. We normally reply within twenty-four hours. If a paid appraisal isn't worth doing, we'll tell you. If you proceed, we agree the scope and fee. Upload your photos right on the website. The checklist shows what's missing. Nothing to print. Prefer us to come to you? We also offer in-home visits, where your appraiser can examine your piano and answer your questions in person. In Alberta, our local area connects Calgary, Medicine Hat and Empress, with nearby visits available too. See our website for the map and prices. We confirm your address before booking. Before completing the appraisal, we'll speak with you by phone at least once to verify the details. Your appraiser researches comparable pianos and market evidence, then checks your report. If more photos or an inspection are needed, we'll explain. Your report is issued by Norberg Pianos Incorporated and signed by the appraiser, stating its purpose, evidence and limitations. It arrives by email. Start with a free review. Let's see what makes sense for you.

TWO REASONS TO KNOW THE VALUE

Make the next decision
with the value documented.

01 / SELLING YOUR PIANO

Don’t undersell a valuable piano.

You don’t want to let your piano go for too little. A written appraisal can give buyers confidence in your advertisement and help you negotiate for more money, with evidence behind your asking price. It documents the value the piano can support; it does not change its condition or guarantee a sale.

Your goal: get the value your piano can support in a sale.

Ask about a sale appraisal

02 / DONATING YOUR PIANO

No buyer? You may still have options.

If you can’t find a buyer, a qualifying donation could give your piano a new home and may offer significant Canadian tax credits, depending on your circumstances. The charity and your tax adviser can confirm the requirements and what you might save.

Your goal: explore potential tax savings when selling hasn’t worked out.

Appraisals for donations

We confirm the report required before accepting an assignment. A standard online appraisal is not automatically a qualified tax appraisal. No selling price or tax saving is guaranteed.

WHAT DO YOU NEED THE VALUE FOR?

Selling is one reason.
Life brings others.

Selling or buying

Document an asking price, negotiate a purchase, or understand an offer before making a decision.

Insurance

Ask about coverage, scheduling an instrument, replacement-value documentation or a claim. Your insurer’s requirements come first; damage claims may need an inspection or specialist.

Estates & inheritance

Executors, beneficiaries and families may need a value as of a particular date for administration, probate or distribution.

Charitable donations

A qualifying gift may offer significant Canadian tax credits. Documented fair market value, the recipient’s acceptance and an official receipt all matter.

Family settlements

A shared instrument may need a documented value for division, separation or settlement. Legal matters can require specialist qualifications.

Restoration decisions

Compare the piano’s supported value with proposed repairs or rebuilding before committing to a major expense.

Moving & personal records

Document the instrument for relocation, inventory, succession planning or a change of ownership. An appraisal may not be necessary for every situation.

Business & institutional assets

Schools, churches and other organizations may need a value for an acquisition, transfer, disposal or asset record.

Legal disputes, lending, tax matters or another purpose?

Tell us who will rely on the report and what they require. Court evidence, expert testimony, collateral, accounting and formal tax assignments may require additional qualifications or a specialist. We confirm competence, independence, inspection needs and acceptance requirements before agreeing to an assignment, and may decline work outside our scope. Listing a possible use here does not promise that every report is offered or will be accepted.

Insurance replacement value, fair market value and a value as of a past date can differ. We agree the correct purpose and basis of value first. No sale price, tax saving or institutional acceptance is guaranteed.

WHAT AN APPRAISAL REALLY IS

An opinion of value.
Supported by research.

An appraisal is a reasoned opinion of what a particular piano is worth, for a stated purpose and as of a specified date. The written report explains the evidence and reasoning behind that conclusion.

We look at the instrument itself and the market in which comparable pianos are bought and sold. Its maker, age, condition, restoration and distinctive features all help tell the story.

  1. 01

    Understand your piano

We review its identity, photographs, measurements, service history and any rebuilding or player-system work. We identify gaps in the evidence and whether an inspection is needed.

  2. 02

    Research the market

We consider relevant comparisons across Canada, including documented sales where available, dealer offerings and current listings. Supply, demand and market trends are assessed as of the valuation date.

  3. 03

    Compare like with like

Asking prices are distinguished from completed sales. We account for differences in condition, age, rebuilding, location and sale terms, including dealer preparation or warranties where relevant.

  4. 04

    Explain the conclusion

Your report identifies the piano, purpose, valuation date, research and reasoning. It states the value conclusion, assumptions and limits of the remote assessment.

Recognizing the value
your piano can support.

We look beyond a single local listing so that relevant Canadian evidence and distinctive qualities are not overlooked. The conclusion reflects the evidence for your piano and the agreed purpose—not a predetermined high or low number.

WHEN FINDING A BUYER HAS BEEN DIFFICULT

A new home for your piano.
A possible tax benefit for you.

A donation to a registered charity or other qualified donee may support Canadian donation tax credits. The recipient must accept the piano and determine whether it can issue an official donation receipt.

An appraisal can help document fair market value. The receipt, eligible amount and actual tax benefit depend on the circumstances. Your tax adviser can explain the requirements before you donate.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A little more
before you begin.

Ask Slava
Who signs and stands behind the report?

Your report is issued by Norberg Pianos Incorporated and signed by the named appraiser. It states the purpose, valuation date, evidence and limitations. A company-issued, signed report does not by itself establish government certification or guarantee acceptance by an insurer, charity, court or the CRA. We confirm the intended recipient’s requirements before accepting the assignment.

What experience supports the appraisal?

Norberg Pianos Incorporated’s background includes piano design, engineering, construction and appraisal assignments for owners and insurance purposes. Owner Slava Sles and her husband, Todd Scott, bring over 40 years of combined piano-industry experience. Todd is a Registered Piano Technician with the Piano Technicians Guild and a designer and builder of Norberg pianos. Slava handles piano appraisals for our Canadian clients, while Todd handles appraisals for clients in the United States. Slava brings over a decade of hands-on experience as a piano technician. Technical piano knowledge and appraisal competence are both important. We confirm who will prepare the report, their suitability for the assignment, the intended recipient’s requirements and whether an inspection is needed before accepting work. We do not claim a universal appraisal licence, accreditation or guaranteed acceptance by insurers, courts or the CRA.

Will you use my details for sales or spam?

No. We use your contact details only for this inquiry and any appraisal you separately request. We never sell your name or email address, add you to a mailing list, or send unsolicited sales messages. Your free review has no obligation to purchase.

Can I start from my phone without printing anything?

Yes. Start with the short free-review form or email Slava at norbergpianos@gmail.com. Photographs are optional for that first step. If you proceed after agreeing the scope and fee, the separate guided form explains the details and photos needed and lets you upload them right here. Remote suitability, the scope and any fee are confirmed before paid work begins. If you proceed, your written appraisal is issued by Norberg Pianos Incorporated, signed by the appraiser and emailed to you. You can save it on your phone or print it afterward if you wish.

What am I actually paying for?

Review of your piano’s identification, photographs and history; research into relevant market comparisons; and a written report explaining the value conclusion and its limitations. The purpose matters, so we agree what the report will address before starting. See the fees and inclusions.

What if an appraisal would cost more than it helps?

Start with our free review. If we don’t think a paid appraisal would be a good use of your money, we’ll tell you. If the likely value is modest, the fee and any moving or repair costs may make a paid report less useful. An inquiry itself does not order an appraisal.

Do I have to find every detail first?

No. Send what you have. We’ll review it and ask for any missing details or angles needed. The photo guide helps avoid repeated requests; it is not a requirement to dismantle or diagnose your piano.

What if I can’t find the serial number?

Tell us it is unknown, hidden or painted over. Photographs, measurements and other markings may help identify the instrument. Do not remove panels or parts to locate it.

What about player or reproducing pianos?

The system’s identity, whether it works and its service or rebuilding history are important. Include photos of accessible labels and controls. A short video can help, but only share one if it is safe and practical.

What do online and in-person appraisals cost?

The initial review is free. An online appraisal is $295 CAD for a vertical piano or $495 CAD for a grand. An in-person appraisal, including the local visit, is $495 CAD for a vertical or $695 CAD for a grand. Prices are in Canadian dollars, per piano, plus applicable taxes. Your total, scope and timing are confirmed in writing before you agree to proceed. Fees are independent of the appraised value. Special-purpose reports and unusual instruments are quoted separately. Compare the options and visit area.

Can you use a higher comparable from another province?

Yes, when it is genuinely comparable and relevant to the market for your piano and the appraisal’s purpose. A higher-priced instrument may provide useful evidence, but we assess its condition, rebuilding, sale terms, location and date. An advertised asking price is not proof of a completed sale. We explain which comparisons support the conclusion and the adjustments they require.

Is fair market value the same as replacement value?

No. Fair market value concerns a transaction between informed, willing parties under the applicable definition. Replacement value concerns the cost of replacing the instrument under the agreed assignment or policy requirements. Those figures can differ. We establish the appropriate basis of value before researching the piano.

Does donating guarantee a tax saving?

No. A donation to a qualified donee may support Canadian donation tax credits, subject to eligibility, valuation and official receipt requirements. Your tax adviser can explain what applies to you. An appraisal alone does not establish eligibility.

What if the report is for insurance, estate or tax use?

Tell us the intended recipient, required valuation date and deadline. These assignments have specific requirements. We confirm the named appraiser’s suitability and qualifications, inspection needs and the recipient’s requirements before accepting the assignment. A standard online appraisal is not automatically suitable for a charitable donation, estate matter or insurance submission. No tax benefit or institutional acceptance is promised.

How do I send the inquiry and photos?

Start with a few quick questions in the free-review form. Photos are optional. Slava normally replies within 24 hours. If you decide on a paid appraisal after agreeing the scope and fee, use the separate guided appraisal form for the detailed information and photos. Both forms deliver to norbergpianos@gmail.com, accessible on Slava’s phone. No separate app is needed.
